  165. "LEARNING COMMUNITY"

  167. Discovery Networks has announced the February launch of the Discovery 
  168. Learning Community on the Internet.  The site features an electronic 
  169. version of Discovery Networks' Educator Guide and a pilot project kicking 
  170. off in conjunction with The Promised Land, a five-hour television series 
  171. about the massive mid-20th century migration of African Americans from 
  172. the deep South to the industrial North between 1942 and 1970.
  173.  
  174. "Discovery Networks' programs are not only richly informative in their 
  175. own right but can and should be the springboard for further academic 
  176. inquiry.  The 'Discovery Learning Community' is designed to support such 
  177. inquiry and provide additional resources to help young people explore 
  178. academic themes in rewarding and engaging ways," says Discovery's Hunter 
  179. Williams, senior manager, educational relations.

  181. The Discovery Learning Community, which is accessible on Internet via 
  182. gopher, world-wide web and ftp, provides teachers, learners, parents and 
  183. mentors with activities and resources that extend the educational value 
  184. of programming on The Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel.  
  185. Throughout the Spring of 1995 the site will have a special focus on the 
  186. many curricular themes present in The Promised Land, including

  438. This site provides a choice between either the full text of the original
  439. Roget's Thesaurus or a search feature to the original text. That's right
  440. I did say *original* text. I believe the original Roget's is over 80 years
  441. old and quite out of date. But some people see this as a plus for there
  442. are words and synonyms in there that are no longer present in newer and
  443. more modern thesaurus texts. Let's say you are researching an old piece
  444. of literature and need to find out about out of date or out of use words
  445. then here is the place to turn to. You must remember also that the original
  446. format of Roget's Thesaurus did not have words listed in alphabetical
  447. order but by topic and thematic listings so it is probably better to use
  448. the search function instead of wading through the archaic topical lists
  449. found in the full text version if speed is of the essence.
